It's not a fixture steeped in history, but that's not surprising given that ICT only entered the SFL in the 1994-95 season. There were two vacancies for SFL spots that year and both Caledonian FC and Inverness Thistle decided to apply. The SFL intimated that both applications may be unsuccessful individually but that a single, joint application may be more desirable. Against a backdrop of much controversy, the clubs agreed, and Caledonian Thistle FC was born. Soon after, it was decided to put "Inverness" at the front of the team's name.
It wasn't to be long before the sides met- the 1994-95 League Cup 1st round to be exact. Dundee ran out 3-0 winners at Dens in front of 3,112. Dundee would themselves go out in the next round to Celtic, also at Dens.
The next game was also a cup game- this time the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden in front of 14,429. It wasn't the most assured performance by Dundee but a sklaffed shot by Giorgi Nemsadze ensured progress to the final and avoided a Pittodrie replay.
2004-5 saw the first and, until this season, only league meetings between the pair. It was pretty straight forward in terms of victories favouring the home team. ICT won the initial game 2-1 at home; lost the next one 3-1 at Dens and then won the next one 3-2 at home. The fourth and final league game at Dens was going Dundee's way up until the 88th minute when substitute Liam Fox equalised for ICT, putting a serious dent in Dundee's survival hopes in the process.
The fixture may not be old, but whenever these two have met, there has been plenty at stake; with Dundee and ICT strong contenders for the First Division crown this season, that doesn't look like changing anytime soon...
