Local rivals they may be, but there isn't exactly a rich history of matches between Forfar and Dundee. The first meetings were back in the old Division 2 in 1938-39. Despite being one of the worst ever finishing league positions in Dundee's history (a lowly 26th place overall) Dundee managed an impressive 10-2 win at Dens, but went down 2-1 in Forfar. Forfar were not present in Division 2 during Dundee's 1946-47 title winning year so the next meeting was in the Scottish Cup of 1963-64. 16,000 turned out to see yet another comfortable Dundee victory- this time 6-1 as the Dark Blues marched to a Hampden final.
Almost 30 years would pass before the next competitive fixtures, this time in 1990-91 and 1991-92 in the Scottish First Division. It would prove to be fruitful for the Dees with the following results recorded over the two seasons- 1-0, 4-1, 1-1 (90-91) & 3-1, 3-0, 4-0, 4-2 (91-92). Another 4-0 victory followed in the 2004-05 League Cup at Dens, with Steve Lovell netting a hat-trick.
That gives Dundee a healthy record of 10 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat when including last night's victory.
Although I concentrate on the major competitions for these features, these clubs have obviously met on Forfarshire Cup duties numerous times, and indeed, in a few finals. These finals are listed below:
1922-23 Dundee 2-0 Forfar
1930-31 Forfar 2-1 Dundee
1945-46 Dundee 6-1 Forfar
1959-60 Dundee 3-2 Forfar
1978-79 Forfar 3-1 Dundee
1983-84 Forfar 3-2 Dundee
