European Cup 1st Round 1962-63

Season 1962-63 is significant for Dundee fans as being the only time our club has competed in Europe's premier club competition. It was to be a baptism of fire as Dundee were drawn against joint favourites for the trophy- Cologne. Cologne earned the right to be part of the draw by winning the 1961-62 German Championship. At that time the German Championship was a round robin event followed up with a final tie to decide the champions- a sort of mini Champions League. Cologne, or FC Köln, won their group by virtue of an excellent 3-1 away win to the fantastic Eintracht and a 1-0 home win over Hamburger SV. They finished off the group matches with an emphatic 10-0 win over FK Pirmasens. This set up a final tie with FC Nürnberg which FC Köln won easily, 4-0. FC Köln would prove to be more than just a mere cup team in 1963-64 when they won the initial Bundesliga.
Other big names to enter the draw included Anderlecht, Real Madrid, Feyenoord, Sporting Lisbon with Stade de Reims and Benfica earning byes. Ipswich Town were England's representatives that season-like Dundee, their only national championship success fell in the 61-62 season. Scottish Clubs had already made their mark on this tournament with Hibs in 1955-56 and Rangers in 1959-60 reaching the semi-finals.
The first round matches were staggered with Dundee's tie being included in the first set of matches played on 5th September 1962. Some shock waves were, no doubt, being sent around Europe at the news that Anderlecht had come from 2-0 and 3-2 down to notch a fantastic 3-3 draw at the Bernabeu. Even bigger shock waves were undoubtedly being sent by the news that joint favourites, FC Köln, were slaughtered 8-1 in Scotland. The rest of the ties went pretty much according to script. The 2nd leg matches sprung up few shocks but Anderlecht, however, followed up their draw in Madrid with an 85th minute goal in a 1-0 win in Brussels to become only the second side, after Barcelona to defeat that great Real Madrid side over 2 legs in Europe.
